Harold Spencer Jones
Sir Harold Spencer Jones (born March 29, 1890 in London , † November 3, 1960 ibid) was a British astronomer.
Life
Jones went to school in London and studied at Cambridge University (Jesus College) with the degree in 1911. He became a Fellow of Jesus College and was from 1913 main assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory as the successor to Arthur Eddington . During the First World War he worked temporarily for the War Ministry, for example on optics. In 1918 he married. 1923 to 1933 he was Royal Astronomer in Cape Town as the successor to Sydney Hough and in 1933 he was Royal Astronomer ( Astronomer Royal ) in Greenwich as the successor to Frank Dyson , which he remained until 1955.
From 1939 to 1960 he was President of the British Horological Institute. 1945 to 1948 he was President of the International Astronomical Union . and the Royal Astronomical Society from 1937 to 1939.
Spencer Jones determined the solar parallax on the basis of observations of the minor planet 433 Eros during its approach to the sun in 1930/31 and published Spencer's Easter formula .
