Harry C. Dietz

Harry C. "Hal" Dietz is an American geneticist , pediatric cardiologist, and cardiovascular researcher at Johns Hopkins University . There he holds a professorship named after Victor Almon McKusick and is director of the William S. Smilow Center for Marfan Research . Since 1997 Dietz has also been doing research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute .

Dietz graduated from the Duke University a Bachelor in Medical Technology and in 1984 at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University (part of the State University of New York ) an MD as the conclusion of the medical school .

Dietz is best known for his contributions to the genetics and pathophysiology of Marfan syndrome . He discovered that the disease is based on a disorder in the fibrillin- 1 gene, which on the one hand is a structural protein and on the other hand inhibits the growth factor TGF-β . His work led to a deeper understanding of the causes of the aortic aneurysm , to the improvement of drug therapy (with losartan , which also inhibits TGF-β) and to the development of a blood test that should indicate the right time for operative treatment of this disease. In 2005 Dietz - together with Bart L. Loeys - was the first to describe the Loeys-Dietz syndrome . Other works by Dietz deal with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and scleroderma .
