Harry Fischbeck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harry Fischbeck , also Harry A. Fishbeck (born June 3, 1879 in Hanover , Germany , † May 28, 1968 in Palm Springs , California , United States ) was a German-born photographer and cameraman for American silent and early sound films.

Life

Fischbeck probably emigrated to the USA towards the end of the 19th century . There he was naturalized on March 30, 1900 or 1906 by the Hudson County Court in Jersey City .

As a pioneer of American cinematography, the trained photographer Fischbeck had already made contact with film before the First World War. Fischbeck's importance grew in the 1920s: he photographed ambitious dramas, costume fabrics and melodramas in which legendary stars took part, including Rudolph Valentino , Gloria Swanson , Emil Jannings and Pola Negri . In 1925 he was behind the camera , together with his British colleague Harold 'Hal' Sintzenich, in two late productions by star director DW Griffith in which comedian WC Fields took on the male lead. Many of his late silent films were also shown in German-speaking countries.

Fischbeck's career experienced a massive slump with the introduction of the sound film. Soon he had to be content with cheap second- and third-rate films. In 1940 Harry Fischbeck , who was married to a Texan who was 25 years his junior, withdrew into private life.
