Harry Hornig

Harry Hornig (born October 22, 1930 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German documentary filmmaker .

Life

Harry Hornig was born the son of a miner, attended secondary school in Gelsenkirchen and then did an apprenticeship as a miner. In 1949 he moved to Jena , where he completed a degree in philosophy, German and film studies at the university there. Since the 1950s he has worked for DEFA-Studio for documentaries and short films. There he became dramaturgy assistant in 1954 under the direction of Gustav Wilhelm Lehmbruck , later dramaturge and editor and worked with Joachim Hadaschik , among others . Since 1958 he worked as a documentary film director and took up writing and dramaturg activities. From 1961 he devoted himself to documentaries for children and young people and worked with the writer couple Wera and Claus Küchenmeister , making the history of the proletarian children's movement in Germany the subject of his documentaries. In 1974 he worked with Róza Berger-Fiedler , both of whom created the film "Live Dreams" on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the GDR.

In addition to his work in the DEFA documentary film studio , Hornig worked for the television of the GDR and became deputy director in the television department of the DEFA studio for short films. From 1979 to 1982 he was chairman of the documentary film and television journalism section of the GDR's Association of Film and Television Workers.

In 1979 he was awarded the National Prize of the GDR, 2nd class for art and literature.

Since 1982 he has been a lecturer in documentary directing at the University of Film and Television. From 1983 to 1986 he headed the directing department and worked as vice-rector for training, film and television productions. Hornig also taught at the University of Television and Film Munich and at the Ruhr University in Bochum and the VHS Gelsenkirchen. He also worked as a writer and dramaturge, where he often worked with the director Róża Berger-Fiedler. In 1991, together with Berger-Fiedler, he founded BABEL Film und Video GmbH, based in Berlin, where Hornig works as an author, dramaturge and consulting producer.
