Pankoff is a documentary film of the DEFA Studios for newsreels and documentaries from Harry Hornig from the year 1966 .

action

In the 1950s to 1960s it was customary in the Federal Republic to speak primarily of Pankow or the Eastern Zone instead of the GDR . Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer in particular pronounced the “w” like an “ff”, which is why he always spoke of “Pankoff” when he meant the political leadership of the GDR. DEFA director Harry Hornig takes this as an opportunity to shoot a satirical montage about it. In Bonn , Oberhausen and Munich he asks passers-by what they understand by this term and has to find out that the answers in most cases show ignorance and, above all, are limited to political phrases. Opinions range from a Communist position in the East to a terror regime and a Russian general. Even a man who knows that Pankow is a district of Berlin finds life there “somehow strange” because it does not exude the atmosphere that he is used to.

That is the reason for Harry Hornig to get on the subway to Pankow (Vinetastraße) and explain the district to the audience with a wink. You see scenes of a long line of people who are supposedly waiting for brainwashing, but it is a betting shop. In a pub, a male choir keeps singing Pankow's national anthem, singing the beautiful song Come, Karlineken, come. We want to go to Pankow, it's wonderful there . Even nature suffocates in the haze of the sewage fields , so nothing of the scent of the big wide world. A highlight in the gray monotony of everyday life is a stay in the outdoor pool . But the Pankow people are not even allowed to swim freely in the open air pool. You can only jump from the diving tower if the water below is clear and the lifeguards allow it. On the bathing lawn you can only see the grim faces of old men playing skat .

Finally, the district mayor is asked in the town hall of Pankow whether he would be the ruler there, which he affirms. The last shots of the film show how the employees of the house gather on the outside staircase as the government of the district and from the off it is suspected that the federal ministers probably mean another Pankow in their speeches.
