Harry White (saxophonist)

Harry Kinross White (* 1967 ) is an American classical saxophonist .

Life

White grew up in the US state Mississippi . He studied saxophone with Lawrence Gwozdz at the University of Southern Mississippi and with the pioneer of the classical saxophone, Sigurd Rascher .

White was a member of the " Raschèr Saxophone Quartet " from 1990 to 2001 . With this ensemble he has made guest appearances at renowned US and European venues.

White has been a freelance saxophonist based in Zurich since 2001 . He has performed with a number of well-known orchestras, such as the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Bochum Symphony Orchestra , the Bonn Beethoven Orchestra , the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Orchester National Bordeaux Aquitaine. He also plays regularly as an orchestral saxophist with the orchestra of the Mannheim National Theater . Together with the Raschèr Quartet he played with Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker at the New Year's Concert 2002.

White is particularly concerned with the lyrical expressive possibilities of the saxophone and together with the composer, pianist and art song expert Edward Rushton recorded songs by Edvard Grieg , arranged for saxophone and piano. In 2014 Rushton and White recorded 23 vocalises by composers such as Arthur Honegger , Olivier Messiaen , Maurice Ravel . A long-term collaboration exists with the Swiss singer La Lupa .

Together with cellist Pi-Chin Chien and Edward Rushton, he forms the "Harry White Trio". He is also a member of the "Raschèr Saxophone Orchestra", which consists of around a dozen saxophonists and is based in southern Germany. Since 2009 he has been leading the “Swiss Saxophone Orchestra”.

After four years of advanced training at the Zurich University of the Arts , he received a Master of Advanced Studies in music physiology in 2010 with a focus on “breathing for winds”. He teaches saxophone at the Zurich Music School.

Harry White plays on a historical saxophone, built in the 1930s, whose sound has been described as very sonorous and noble .
