Final round of the German team championship in chess 1962

The final round of the German team championship in chess in 1962 took place from November 16 to 18, 1962 in Hanover .

The Cologne railway chess club , the Hanoverian chess club , the Munich chess club from 1836 and the Berlin-Zehlendorf chess club competed in the final of the 16th West German team championship . A round-robin tournament was held. Willi Fohl was the tournament director.

The four preliminary rounds

From October 19 to 21, 1962, the four preliminary rounds of the German Team Championship were held.

Preliminary round northwest

In Bremen the SK Berlin-Zehlendorf (14 board points) prevailed, ahead of the Düsseldorfer SG (13), the Hamburg SG (10.5) and the SK Bremen-Ost (10.5).

Preliminary round southwest

In Heidelberg the ESV Tower Cologne won (14 board points), ahead of SK Bamberg in 1868 and Heidelberger SK in 1879 (12.5 points each), as well as Königsspringer Frankfurt (9).

Preliminary round southeast

The preliminary round Southeast took place in Stuttgart . It won Munich (18.5 board points), ahead of Stuttgart (14.5), Ludwigshafen (9.5) and Saarlouis (5.5).

Preliminary round northeast

The Hannoversche SK came first in Hanover, ahead of the Berlin SG Eckbauer , the Kiel SG from 1884 and the Bielefelder SK from 1883 .

The Cologne team could only win one game against Munich. Fourteen-year-old Benjamin Robert Huebner on board 7 was the winner. He was not only able to win all three games in the final, but also in the Heidelberg preliminary round southwest . Wolfgang Unzicker , Heinz Lehmann and Richard Czaya each got two points on the top board .
