Final round of the German team championship in chess in 1980

The final round of the German team championship in 1980 took place in Solingen from October 3rd to 5th . Over the four-track Bundesliga itself had Favorite Hammonia (Group North), the Solingen SG 1868 (Group West), King Knight Frankfurt (Group Southwest) and the SF Marktheidenfeld qualified (Group South). Since the single-track Bundesliga chess league was introduced for the 1980/81 season , it was the last such final tournament.

In the first round, the Solingen SG 1868 took the lead with a clear success against the SF Marktheidenfeld. At the same time, Favorite Hammonia managed a narrow victory against Königsspringer Frankfurt.

In the second round, Favorite Hammonia prevailed against the stronger team of the Solingen SG 1868 and took over the top of the table. At the same time Königsspringer Frankfurt defeated the SF Marktheidenfeld.

Favorite Hammonia would have been enough to win the title 4: 4 against the bottom of the table Marktheidenfeld, but they lost 3: 5. The Solingen SG 1868 used this rifle help to win the title with a victory against Königsspringer Frankfurt.
