Harry Lange (production designer)

Hans-Kurt Lange (born December 7, 1930 in Eisenach , Thuringia ; † May 22, 2008 in Oxford , England ) was a German-British production designer .

Life

Lange studied art in Germany in the late 1940s and emigrated to America in 1951. There he served the US Air Force during the Korean War to create training materials for flight schools. In 1950 he was registered as a department head at NASA , which he left again in 1965.

In 1968 Stanley Kubrick hired him to create designs for his 2001 film : A Space Odyssey . He worked on this project for almost three years and received an Oscar nomination for Best Production Design in 1969. He then worked for the first Star Wars film A New Hope and received its second and final Oscar nomination. Lange was also part of the creative team for the sequel The Empire Strikes Back from 1980.

He also worked with the scientist Wernher von Braun and illustrated his book History of Rocket Technology and Space Travel .

In 2005, Lange suffered a stroke and finally died on May 22, 2008. He leaves behind his wife and two children, Eric and John. The latter is a curator at a museum in Oxford. Harry's wife Daisy also inspired the last scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey : When the HAL 9000 starts and the robot Daisy, Daisy sings.
