Harry Magdoff

Harry Magdoff (born August 21, 1913 in Bronx , New York City as Henry Samuel Magdoff , † January 1, 2006 in Burlington , Vermont ) was an American , Marxist- oriented economist , author and publicist.

Life

Magdoff, the son of Russian immigrants, claims to have been a Marxist since he was 15. He studied physics and mathematics at the City College of New York . During his studies he became a member of the radical The Social Problem Club. For this he worked on the newspaper Frontiers. Magdoff later became a member of the National Students League and the Youth League Against War and Fascism.

After Magdoff had to leave City College because of his political activities, he became a student at New York University's School of Commerce. There he made his degree in economics in 1936. He then worked for the National Commission on Technological Unemployment and Reemployment of the Works Progress Administration. He became one of the most influential socialist economists. During the Second World War he worked for the War Production Board .

He was blacklisted during the McCarthy era and had to work on Wall Street as an analyst and stock trader. In the late 1950s he became an associate of the Russell and Russell book publisher. He stayed there until 1965 when this company was sold. In the same year he wrote his first article for the Monthly Review . From 1969 he was co-editor with Paul M. Sweezy of the socialist magazine and remained so until his death in 2006. Before that he worked for a few years at the New School for Social Research as a so-called adjunct professor.

His 1969 book "The Age of Imperialism: The Economics of US Foreign Policy" (in German: The Age of Imperialism: The Economic Background of US Foreign Policy) has been translated into 15 languages.
