There are different statements about Harry Manning's origin. He was born out of wedlock in Bremen and adopted by his future stepfather, an Englishman named Manning, and moved with his parents to New York at the age of ten.

There he graduated from the New York Nautical School (later: US Merchant Marine Academy) and from 1914 sailed on the training ship USS Newport . From 1921 he drove for the United States Lines . At the end of January 1926 he was involved in rescuing the castaways on the Antinoe . He had his first ship command from 1928 on the President Roosevelt. In 1952 he commanded the United States on its maiden voyage, on which it won a blue ribbon .

Manning also had a license to fly and flew to Hawaii with Amelia Earhart in 1937 . In the further attempt to record, in the course of which Earhart was presumably killed, he could not take part because he had to go back to his professional duties. A little later he crashed with his own Fairchild and suffered serious injuries, but was able to go back to work nine months later.

Manning had numerous interests. He trained in boxing after being beaten up as a young man by a drunken seaman in Bremerhaven ; he also studied languages and literature, especially the texts of William Shakespeare , and was also a gifted pianist.
