Harry O. Ruppe

Harry Oskar Ruppe (born May 3, 1929 in Leipzig ; † March 12, 2016 in Munich ) was a German aerospace engineer .

Life

After graduating from high school, Harry O. Ruppe studied theoretical physics in Leipzig in 1948 at the Neue Nikolaischule Leipzig. In 1950 he moved to the Technical University of Berlin , where he graduated with a diploma in 1955. In 1963 he received his PhD thesis on the costs of manned Mars flights at the TU Berlin as a Dr.-Ing. PhD.

He had been working in Wernher von Braun's team in Huntsville , Alabama , USA, since 1957 . Until 1963 he worked first as a project engineer, later as assistant to the director, in the Future Project Office of the Apollo program . Between 1959 and 1960 he was also the project manager of the lunar probes Pioneer 3 and Pioneer 4 . From 1963 to 1966 he was program director for the manned Mars flyby mission EMPIRE (Early Manned Planetary Roundtrip Experiment) and later director of the Future Project Office.

In April 1966 he was appointed to the Technical University of Munich and took over the newly created chair for space technology, which he held as a full professor until 1994. He founded the laboratory for research on cosmic dust in the planetary system. He developed the "Munich Space Chair".

Harry O. Ruppe left two children behind.
