Harry Verbeke

Harry Verbeke (born April 10, 1922 in Leeuwarden , † January 27, 2004 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch jazz saxophonist (tenor).

Career

Verbeke taught himself to play the saxophone during the German occupation of Holland. In the 1940s he played with "The Millers", a swing band with singer Pia Beck . In the 1950s he was a member of the hardbop combo “Diamond Five” with pianist Cees Slinger , trombonist Cees Smal , bassist Jacques Schols and drummer John Engels , who played in their own nightclub “Scheherezade” in Amsterdam . In 1963 they even appeared in the Concertgebouw and in 1973 they made a recording "Back together" with the singer Greetje Kauffeld . From 1960, many of the members were also members of Boy Edgar's big band , to whose saxophone section in addition to Verbeke u. a. Tinus Bruijn , Piet Noordijk , Theo Loevendie , Herman Schoonderwalt and Toon van Vliet were among them. From 1967 Verbeke had her own quartet. He also played in many radio and television orchestras and in Jerry van Rooyen's orchestra . Verbeke performed a lot at the North Sea Jazz Festival and live on the jazz radio program "Tros Sesjun".

In 1968 he won the Wessel Ilcken Prize . He also won two Edison Prizes and the Sea Jazz Prize.
