Harvey Station is a town in the Canadian New Brunswick , York County (New Brunswick) . The place has 363 residents and is located about 35 km southwest of the capital Fredericton . The community is located in a valley and to the north is Cranberry Lake, also known as Harvey Lake.

history

The name of the village goes back to the former southern settlement Harvey Settlement (parish of Manners Sutton). Harvey Station was the name of the train station on the northern edge of Harvey Settlement that was built during the construction of the European and North American Railway (Western Extension) from Saint John to Vanceboro , Maine . Several merchants, hoteliers and other businesses settled near the train station and thus established a new business district.

railway station

In 1852, the New Brunswick government and the European and North American Railway signed a contract to build a railway line between Nova Scotia and Maine . By 1869 the line between Saint John and Fredericton was already completed and continued through the northern edge of Harvey Settlement.

The passenger station was built in 1869 and extended in 1909, while the adjoining parish was named Harvey Station. The European and North American Railway was later absorbed by the New Brunswick Railway, which in turn became part of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in the 1880s . Harvey then became a station on the transcontinental route from Saint John to Montreal . The new passenger service brought growth and prosperity to Harvey. Hotels for train travelers and shops and factories for local supplies were built.
