history

With the merger of the districts of Halberstadt, Quedlinburg and Wernigerode on July 1, 2007, a restructuring of the three independent district savings banks became necessary. The location of the new Sparkasse to be formed on January 1, 2008 was discussed for a long time. In order to make it possible to balance purchasing power through the district reform, only Quedlinburg and Wernigerode were still in discussion, as Halberstadt received the district seat. The decision for Wernigerode was made after Quedlinburg received the seat of the Harz tax office.

The three predecessor institutes each came into being in 1952 as part of the reorganization of the savings banks in the GDR .

In Halberstadt, the Städtische Sparkasse was opened on June 1, 1833, which became the Kreis-Sparkasse on June 1, 1858. The first savings bank in Wernigerode was founded in 1837 in the municipality of Wernigerode Castle as the Fürstlich Stolbergische Privatsparkasse , until the Städtische Sparkasse Wernigerode opened on July 1, 1849. This became the Kreissparkasse Wernigerode in 1906. On January 15, 1849, the Städtische Sparkasse Quedlinburg opened.

On September 25, 2010, the Harzsparkasse organized the 35th national and 20th international Sparkasse Marathon, after having applied for the organization in 2008.

The branches in Hausneindorf, Siptenfelde and Weddersleben were closed on September 1, 2010, and since then they have also been served by the mobile Sparkasse bus. This means that only personal services are provided in this way in a total of 20 localities. The closings were for economic reasons and affected branches with fewer than ten customers per day. In 2018, seven more locations closed for the same reason, five were converted into self-service locations. At the turn of the year 2019/2020 there will be 31 branches after the closure of five branches.

In Quedlinburg, the Harzsparkasse operates a branch in the listed building Markt 15 .
