Political stance

Hashem Aghajari lost a leg in the Iran-Iraq war . He became internationally known for his criticism of the social grievances and political oppression in Iran and the analysis of their religious and cultural causes. He stated publicly that the Muslims the Islamic clerics not likely to blindly follow. Aghadscheri calls for "Islamic Protestantism" and "Islamic humanism " in the tradition of Ali Shariati :

“Today's Islam must be different. We have to develop a new understanding of Islam in all areas of life. Today's Islam must fit today's mindset and reality ... The religious leaders have taught us that it is a crime to interpret the Quran on your own. They probably feared that their guild would be ruined if the boys learned to read the Koran themselves ... The people are not monkeys who only imitate. The learner understands and acts accordingly. He tries to expand his knowledge so that one day he no longer needs the teacher. The fundamentalists, however, strive for a relationship between master and retinue. The Lord then always remains the Lord and the entourage always the entourage. This is mental slavery - like a chain around the neck. The ruling clergy in Iran want to exercise total power ... Our culture needs an Islamic humanism. Human rights are guaranteed in our constitution. Nobody may be trampled underfoot. "
