The hazel bran cupling ( Encoelia furfuracea ), also known as Kleiige Büschelbecherling or Kleiiger hazel cupling , is a type of fungus from the family of Sclerotia cup relatives (Sclerotiniaceae) and lives on dead branches of hazel and alder .

features

Macroscopic features

The hazel bran cupling forms closed, sessile, 5–20 mm wide fruiting bodies, the apothecia , on dead, but often still attached branches . They have a leather-brown, sticky-grainy exterior, the excipulum . They get their sticky appearance from its rounded cells. When ripe, they spread out in a bowl-shaped manner and reveal the darker brown fruit layer, the hymenium . The fruit bodies have a leathery, tough consistency and are thin-fleshed. Most of them are tightly tufted.

Microscopic features

The tubes are cylindrical-club-shaped and measure 65 to 90 (–120) × 5.5 to 6.5 μm. The smooth, unseptated ascospores are hyaline , slightly sausage-shaped ( allantoid ), have small oil droplets at the ends and measure 6–11.5 × 2–2.5 μm. The fungus has slender paraphyses that are swollen at the tip .

Ecology and diffusion

The hazel bran cupling lives saprophytically on dead branches of hazel and, more rarely, alder trees . It can be found from late autumn to early summer. However, fresh fruiting bodies are mainly found in late winter and spring. It has a wide, but probably incomplete distribution. It occurs in Central, Western and Northern Europe, but also in North America. E. Gerhardt says it is not often. In Austria finds were reported from all federal states except Burgenland .

Systematics

Originally described by Albrecht Wilhelm Roth as Peziza furfuracea , Petter Adolf Karsten established the genus Encoelia in 1871 with Encoelia furfuracea as the type species .
