Only Hassan Wirajuda (born July 9, 1948 in Tangerang , Banten ) is an Indonesian diplomat and politician .

biography

After attending school, he studied law at the University of Indonesia and graduated in 1971 with the graduation from. After his admission he worked as a lawyer. Some time later he entered the diplomatic service . In 1976 he completed postgraduate studies at Oxford University , which he completed in 1977 with a certificate in diplomacy . He later studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy , where he earned a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) in 1984 . He then completed his studies at the School of Law at Harvard University in 1985 with a Master of Laws (LL.M.). Most recently, he was awarded a doctorate in international law (Doctor of Juridical Science in International Law) from the University of Virginia in 1987.

In the course of his further diplomatic career, Wirajuda became Director for International Organizations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993 . Subsequently, between October 1997 and December 1998, he was employed as an ambassador in Egypt and then until July 2000 as a permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva . After returning to Indonesia, he was Director General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from July 2000 to August 2001.

On August 9, 2001, President Megawati Sukarnoputri appointed him Foreign Minister. He also retained this office in the government of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's successor in office since October 2004.

In September 2005 he spoke to the General Assembly of the United Nations about international terrorism , natural disasters in the region such as tsunamis , but also about cooperation in ASEAN .

On February 6, 2009, Wirajuda, in his position as Foreign Minister, criticized Myanmar for the treatment of Rohingya people . The starting point was that Rohingya hit the headlines as boat refugees at the beginning of 2009 after Thailand refused them a residence permit and deported around a thousand in simple motorless boats to the open sea. About 250 of them were later before to India belonging Andaman rescued and about 200 off the coast of Aceh in Indonesia . The Myanmar Consul General in Hong Kong commented on this in a letter to the “dear colleagues” (of the diplomatic corps) in which he denied the Rohingya belonging to Myanmar with reference to their dark skin color. Marty Natalegawa succeeded him as Foreign Minister on October 22, 2009 .
