Raden Mohammad Marty Muliana Natalegawa (born March 22, 1963 in Bandung ) is an Indonesian diplomat and politician .

biography

After attending Ellesmere College and Concord College in Great Britain from 1976 to 1981, he studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science , from which he graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). He then completed a postgraduate studies at Corpus Christi College of the University of Cambridge , which he in 1985 with a Master of Philosophy ended (M.Phil.).

After his return he joined the diplomatic service in 1986 and worked there for some time in the research and development department. During this time his 1993 took place Promotion to Doctor of Philosophy at the Australian National University (ANU). Between 1994 and 1999 he was a member of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York . During this time, Indonesia became a member of the United Nations Security Council from 1996 to 1997.

After returning to Indonesia, he was appointed director of the Department of International Organizations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was also responsible for leading the political representation in several multilateral forums as well as the consultations that ultimately led to the independence referendum in East Timor in 1999 .

In 2002 he was appointed Chief of Staff of Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda's office . At the same time, he was also Director General for Cooperation with ASEAN in the Foreign Ministry and spokesman for the Foreign Ministry until 2005 . During his time as Director General for Cooperation with ASEAN, Indonesia was temporarily chairman of this community and initiator of the Bali Concord II in 2003 , in which ASEAN emphasized that democracy strengthens peace and stability in the region. The non-democratic states also agreed. He was also a supporter of an East Asia Summit with the participation of Australia , India and New Zealand . As spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, he introduced a new style of presentation of foreign policy issues and, on the other hand, faced the growing problem of international terrorism . On December 14, 2004, he received the first Public Relations Society Award from the Indonesian Press Society for his work as spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On November 11, 2005, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appointed him Ambassador to Great Britain . At the same time he was accredited as ambassador to Ireland . On September 5, 2007, he then became Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

President Yudhoyono finally appointed him on October 21, 2009 as the successor to long-time Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda.
