Life

Udelgard Körber-Grohne grew up in Bremen and studied biology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald during the Second World War , then in Braunschweig . Until her marriage, she worked at the Lower Saxony State Institute for Marsh and Wurten Research in Wilhelmshaven , where she was responsible for the archaeobotanical analysis in the archaeological excavation project for the Feddersen Wierde settlement .

After a family break and the death of her husband, Körber-Grohne moved to the University of Hohenheim in 1970 and worked at the Botanical Institute there under Burkhard Frenzel . In the following years she became involved in the field of archaeobotany in southern Germany, where this discipline was largely orphaned after its early beginnings. Since 1973 she has presented edits of botanical material from excavations in the state in numerous scientific and popular science publications for the Baden-Württemberg State Monument Preservation. She completed her habilitation with her research on Feddersen Wierde and had a lasting impact on her subject with her publications and through her students. Renowned archaeobotanists emerged from a working group she founded. She held a professorship at the University of Hohenheim until she retired in 1988.

Körber-Grohne was a member of the German Archaeological Institute .
