Hatı Çırpan (born Satı Kadın , 1882 in Kazan , Ottoman Empire ; died March 21, 1956 in Ankara ) was a Turkish politician and farmer . Çırpan was one of the first women parliamentarians in Turkey in 1935 .

Life

Hatı Çırpan was born in Kazan in 1890. She was a farmer and fought in the Turkish War of Independence from 1919 to 1923 . In 1934 she was the head of the village of Kazan, which at that time was still about 50 kilometers from Ankara.

On July 16, 1934, Çırpan was presented to President Ataturk . He was on an excursion and was impressed by her performance and her intelligence. Çırpan was the mother of five children and her husband had died in action during the war.

On 5 December 1934, the Turkish women were given the active and passive voting rights at the country level. Ataturk supported Çırpan in the upcoming election campaign and this moved after the elections on February 8, 1935 as a member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey . She was one of 18 women there - at the beginning there were 17. At that time Parliament had the highest percentage of women in Europe. The Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi was the only party represented.

Hatı Çırpan represented the Ankara constituency in the fifth electoral term . She died on March 21, 1956 in the city of Ankara.
