Hatiora gaertneri is a species of plant in the genus Hatiora from the cactus family(Cactaceae) and a hybrid parent of the "Easter cactus" ( Hatiora × graeseri ). The specific epithet gaertneri honors the German doctor Karl F. Gaertner in Blumenau .
description
Hatiora gaertneri has a shrubby growth with drooping shoots and is richly branched. The mostly flattened, but occasionally three to six-sided, cloudy green, often reddish at first, shoot segments are 4 to 7 centimeters long and 2 to 2.5 centimeters wide. The margins are slightly notched below the areoles covered with short, brownish yellow bristles .
The funnel-shaped, dark scarlet flowers appear in 1 to 3 at the tips of the shoot segments. They are 4 to 5 centimeters long and 4 to 7.5 centimeters in diameter. The red fruits are elongated.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Hatiora gaertneri is common in the Brazilian states of Paraná , Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina at altitudes of 350 to 1300 meters.
The first description as Epiphyllum russellianum var. Gaertneri by Eduard August von Regel was published in 1884. Wilhelm Barthlott put the variety in 1987 as a species in the genus Hatiora . Synonyms include Phyllocactus gaertneri (rule) K.Schum. (1894) and Schlumbergera gaertneri (Regel) Britton & Rose (1913).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
