House Daus in Wittlich
Entrance area with year

The house Daus is under monument protection standing residential and farm buildings in the Rhineland-Palatinate Wittlich , Karrstraße 19-21. Its roots go back to the 12th century. Since 1587 it has been continuously owned by the Daus family, who gave the building its name.

description

Most of the building fabric dates back to the 17th century, as indicated by the year 1686 on the double portal of the house. However, the outer wall facing the courtyard and a side wall of the gate passage still receive components from the 15th and 16th centuries.

The street front of the house shows one-part and multi-part rectangular windows and two entrance doors lying close together (the so-called double portal ). A round arched gate leads into the courtyard belonging to the house. In the older courtyard front there are two-part late Gothic windows that are closed at the top by a keel arch . Your window stones are the oldest Wittlichs.

The former living room on the ground floor, which is now used for gastronomy, has a richly stuccoed Cologne beam ceiling and a fireplace wall equipped with niches. In their spandrels are ornaments in the style of the late Renaissance .

history

The first written mention of the house, whose builder is unknown, dates back to 1152. The property, including the courtyard on it, was owned by the Trier Archdiocese , which also operated a wine press there from 1215 . The Zum Bären inn existed there since 1532 and served among other things for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela . In 1587 the house came into the possession of the Daus family, who are still the owners today.

From 1910, Katharina Daus and her children ran a shop in the building that sold coal and briquettes and was located there until 1966. In 1980, as part of Wittlich's urban redevelopment, Haus Daus was partially restored and modernized under monument preservation aspects, whereby the original subdivision of the interior spaces was retained. Since January 1981 it has been home to a restaurant again.
