House Wildenrath

Haus Wildenrath is a former farm with a nature trail in Wildenrath near Wegberg near Mönchengladbach on the Lower Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia . The farm is located in the nature reserve Helpensteiner Bachtal, upper Schaagbachtal and Petersholz and in the Maas-Schwalm-Nette nature park .

history

Cottage garden

The farm was mentioned in a document as early as the 12th century as the property of the Counts of Wassenberg . Today's farm complex dates from around 1700 and was used as a farm until the 1960s. Here the original landscape of the region is presented to the visitor in a small space. In 1964 the community of Wildenrath acquired the site. In 1970, the Schwalm Nette nature park set up Germany's first environmental education center here. In 2003 the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) leased the house and since then has operated a nature conservation station, ecological research and offers nature education programs. There are five nature trails on the approximately 25 hectare area with diverse soil conditions.

Conservation station

The nature conservation station looks after the farm and the grounds. In addition to landscape conservation, this also includes keeping domestic and farm animal breeds threatened with extinction. These include a. White polled Heidschnucken , Dülmen wild horses , colorful Bentheimer country pigs and German sparrowhawks . Other projects include the 1st Rhenish fruit variety garden, the LEADER project in the communities of Gangelt , Waldfeucht and Selfkant, and an inclusion project. The nature conservation station is an organic farm certified by the organic inspection agency.
