List of breeds of chicken |
The German sparrowhawk is a breed of chicken that attracts attention with its piebald feather pattern. It owes its name to the sparrowhawk , as this bird of prey also has a similarly piebald breast pattern. This breed was declared "Endangered Livestock Breed of the Year" 2012 by the Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animals (GEH).
history
The German Sparrowhawk was bred from 1900 by Otto Trieloff from Duisburg, one of the pioneers of pedigree poultry breeding in Germany, from cured Plymouth Rock , cured Italians , gray Scots, corked Bergisch Schlotterkämmen and black Minorkas . Trieloff called the new breed initially blocked Minorka. He exhibited the first five strains at the first West German Young Poultry Show in 1903 in Duisburg. In 1907 the special association of breeders of the blocked Minorka was founded under the chairmanship of Trieloff. The association exists to this day under the name "Conservation Breeding Association of Breeders of the German Sperberhuhnes and the German Dwarf Cocks". In 1917 the breed was renamed German Sparrowhawks.
The German sparrowhawk is one of the endangered German chicken breeds. The Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animal Breeds classifies the German Sparrowhawk in Category II (endangered). The Central Documentation of Animal Genetic Resources in Germany reports 103 male and 423 female animals for 2009. There is no herdbook for this breed.
The breed population has recovered a bit in recent years. This illustrates the development of the number of members of the special breed club, to which only 15 breeders belonged in the 1980s. Especially since the beginning of the new millennium, the number of members has increased significantly again. In 2012 alone, when the German Sparrowhawk was “Endangered Livestock Breed of the Year”, 30 new members joined the special association. As a result, the number of members is now 100.
Breed characteristics
It is a medium-sized breed of chicken shaped like a country chicken . In addition to the German sparrowhawk, there are other chicken breeds that are bred, among other things, but not exclusively, in sparrowed colors, e.g. B. Marans . The German Sparrowhawk is only available in one color. It differs from other sparrowed chickens, among other things, by the pure white ear discs , the flesh-colored legs and its elegant shape, which is characterized by the long, broad torso, the arched chest and the long sternum. The feathers show a slightly curved, cross-banded change from black to light blue, without sharp contours. In the hen, the dark feather field is more pronounced than the white, in the rooster, dark and light feather fields alternate in the same width. That is why the hens are much darker than the roosters.
The roosters weigh between 2.5 kg and 3 kg, the hens between 2 kg and 2.5 kg. The German sparrowhawk is an economic breed with good meat production and a laying capacity of around 180 (up to a maximum of 230) eggs per year. The white meat is of excellent quality. They have a weakly developed breeding instinct and are described as robust, precocious and fast- growing. The cock's ring size is 20 and the hen 18.
The chicken breed is considered lively and trusting. German sparrowhawks are good forage hunters when they have enough free range and only fly little.
German dwarf cattle
In addition to the large sparrows, there have also been the German dwarf pigs since the 1960s. This is thanks to the breeders Heinrich Rehme (Osnabrück) and Paul Adam (Mülheim / Ruhr). They chose a black German dwarf hen and a German sparrowhawk cock as starting animals. In 1968 the dwarf cattails were exhibited in public for the first time, but they did not receive good reviews because of their size, which was above the norm for bantams. In 1974, breeders were given very good ratings for the first time at national shows. Thereupon the Federal Breeding Committee recognized the German dwarf boar as a breed in the same year.
Existence and endangerment
German sparrowhawks are rare and have been added to the list of endangered domestic animal breeds . The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food lists the German Sparrowhawks in the " Red List of Endangered Livestock Breeds 2013 " in hazard class II (endangered). According to this, there were 103 roosters and 423 hens in Germany in 2009.
