history

Hotel Hirschen around 1900

The Haus Zentrum was built on the site of the Hotel Hirschen. This was built after a fire in 1795 as a tavern with an atrium around which dining rooms, club halls and halls were laid out.

By a consortium made up of circles of the Catholic-Conservative Party, today the CVP , the Hirschen was sold in 1957 to a consortium center. From January 1958, the city council negotiated with the new owners to build a town house on the Hirschen property. During the secret negotiations between the city and the consortium, the guest operation was stopped in autumn 1958. In February 1959, the consortium submitted a planning application for an office building. In June the hotel was demolished. At the same time, the city council submitted a purchase agreement for the property.

In a controversial vote that took place on July 26, 1959, the purchase was rejected against the yes slogan of the conservative Christian Social Party. A real estate company then bought the property and commissioned a general contractor to carry out Hanns A. Brütsch's plans for Haus Zentrum.

In a development plan in 1962 the construction of new buildings in this part of the old town was tightened. Contrary to the architect's intentions, no further modern new buildings could be built around the Haus Zentrum. The isolated glass cube became a political issue for decades. The demolition of this “architectural horror” was requested several times.

The center house consists mainly of office space belonging to the city administration. An extension that served as a replacement for the restaurant is now used as a meeting room. Between 2007 and 2009 the house was renewed and energetically renovated.

Since 2013 depends nose of Luca Degunda center on the facade of the house.
