Viviane's house

The house of Viviane ( French Hôtié de Viviane ) is one of several megalithic systems that are considered to be the houses of the legendary fairy Viviane (from Arthurian legend ). It is located in the municipality of Paimpont , in the Ille-et-Vilaine department , west of Rennes in the mythical Brocéliande forest ( French La Forêt de Brocéliande ) in Brittany in France . The monuments in what is now known as the “Forest of Paimpont” have been rediscovered (due to devastating forest fires). An excavation program scientifically recorded the monuments between 1982 and 1985.

All that remains of Vivianne's house are the supporting stones in the form of twelve slates , the roofing has disappeared. Inside it measures 2.9 m in length and has a width of 1.6 m. A slightly lower stone slab in the south allowed access to the chamber. All around, with a diameter of about 15.0 m, an area of chopped slate was uncovered. The plates had been driven into the ground at an angle. Polished stone axes from the dolerite of the vein of Plussulien ( Département Côtes-du-Nord ), as well as grindstones , flint and shattered ceramics from the late Neolithic were also found . This finding coincides with the radiocarbon dating (3355 to 2890 BC). It is an exceptionally small stone grave at a time when the longer allées couvertes were numerous, especially on the edge of the Paimpont forest.

The dolmen , which used to be called the “druid's grave”, is located above the valley of no return ( Val sans retour ) near La Guette in a forest clearing. In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

Nearby are Merlin's grave and La Guette's stone chest .
