Homework book from the GDR (DIN A5 paperback)

A homework notebook is a notebook or smaller book with a pre-printed calendar in which students enter their homework and the due date. In addition to the main purpose of planning work and time , the booklet can also be used for communication between the teachers and the parents of the students.

use

The educationalist Kurt Singer advises schoolchildren to write down all homework in their homework notebook during the lesson in which it is given. The entry should be made for the day on which the homework is due. In order to facilitate the time planning, in addition to the explicitly given homework, regularly occurring tasks should also be entered. This can be, for example, vocabulary training or preparation for a class test .

The homework booklet is also used for messages from teachers to parents, which may have to be acknowledged. In some schools, such releases are not written in the homework book, but for instance in the release booklet registered the child or placed as a loose leaf in a message folder.

layout

Homework books are often in A5 format . A division of one week per double page is usual, with Monday to Wednesday being placed in three fields on the left side, while on the right side under the two fields for Thursday and Friday one field remains free. This empty space can be used for weekly tasks or teacher notices in ad-supported booklets also are there ads placed. Each field should have at least as many lines as there can be school hours in a day. It is usual to have additional pages for the timetable , sometimes foldable or as tabs next to the page edges, so that the subjects do not have to be rewritten on each weekly page.

With another possible design of the double page, every five working days of a week are arranged one below the other on the outer edge of the left page. At the top of the booklet, a table header that contains all school subjects runs across the width of the double page. For every day there is a field for every possible subject. In the USA homework books are sometimes ordered directly from the school or the school district , in which case the booklet can contain information about the school, the code of conduct and the dress code in addition to the timetable .

The design of COVER is for simple trademarks -Heften often very simple. In the case of the branded homework books with more elaborate features, there are booklets with a design specially developed for the manufacturer. Other manufacturers rely on licensed graphics, such as booklets with motifs from the Wilder Kerlen , the Simpsons , with Hannah Montana or Hello Kitty .

Economical meaning

Homework books belong to the product group of paper, office and stationery (PBS), subgroup school supplies, and are mainly sold seasonally at the beginning of the school year . Main sales channels are stationery stores , stationery departments in department stores , internet mail order and distribution at the school. There are own brands of the trade in addition to rather simply designed branded products and more expensive products with elaborate design and features.

In addition to the books to be bought, there are also advertising-financed homework books. Advertisements in these homework books can be booked according to age group and regionally and are more expensive than advertisements in youth magazines due to the low wastage and the comparatively longer useful life in their thousand-contact price . Schools at which such booklets are distributed are contractually bound to the marketing company.
