Haxenhaus to the Rheingarten

The Haxenhaus zum Rheingarten in Cologne's old town , protected as a historical monument , housed Cologne breweries under different names and today serves as a traditional inn, with a verifiable history of the house of more than 780 years.

history

The house was first documented in 1231 under the name "Huus am Bootermaate" (house on the butter market). The building, which remained undestroyed in the World Wars, was created from two adjoining houses from the High Middle Ages , the former south house and the former north house (with the traditional names “in Foro butyri” (at the butter market) and the city hostel “Haus Konyxsteyn”).

During the Renaissance , these two houses were united and housed a brewery under repeatedly changing names for at least 282 years. With the abolition of the guilds in Cologne by the French occupation government, the brewery “Zum Verloren Sohn”, Buttermarkt 32, is listed in the brewery directory of 1798 under the last guild brewer Mathias Segschneider. The name was previously passed down as "Brauhaus Könixstein" and then as the brewery "Der Wappenhof". The brewery's brewery was stopped in 1882 and not resumed afterwards.

Since the early 1990s, the building has housed the “Haxenhaus zum Rheingarten” inn, which was furnished in the traditional Cologne brewery style; the original ceilings, vaulted cellars, stairs and doors of the historic house have largely been preserved.

particularities

The Haxenhaus zum Rheingarten is a stop on the Cologne Brewery Hiking Trail and the Rhenish Legends Trail . According to legend, are the brownies on the historic staircase in Haxenhaus over the peas tripped and "down tumbles" be - and have left in anger here over Cologne forever. The medieval Haxenhaus is also the setting of a historical crime novel, which, under the title Der Büttel zu Cöln, deals with (fictional) crimes in Cologne in the late 13th century.
