The Hearst Tower in New York City , New York stands on the 57th Street corner 8th Avenue (300 West) at Columbus Circle . It is the seat of the eponymous Hearst Corporation . The Hearst Tower is already a so-called “signature building”, in which the name is inextricably linked to the building (such as the Chrysler Building in New York City or the John Hancock Center in Chicago ).
The 46-storey high-rise was designed by the architect Norman Foster ( Foster + Partners architects ) and integrated into an existing building (see story) by Turner Construction . Material could be saved through inclined steel girders (see pictures). Its dimensions are 182 m (597 ft), 80,000 m² of office space. It was placed on top of what was originally a six-story building. The triangular pattern of the facade was built using 9,500 tons of predominantly recycled steel.
Environmentally friendly construction
Hearst Tower is probably New York City's greenest office tower.
- 90% of the steel used contains recycled material.
- 26% less energy costs than comparable high-rise buildings.
- 869 tons of carbon dioxide are saved.
- The roof collects rainwater and thus reduces water costs by 25% when it rains.
- Sensors control the natural supply of light in the building and thus save costs for electrical light.
In the atrium there is a three-story water sculpture, the Icefall, for air humidification . The Hearst Tower received a gold certificate from the LEED program of the US Green Building Council for this top performance in energy saving .
history
The base of the building on Eight Avenue was completed in 1928 under the direction of the architect Joseph Urban . The Art Deco style substructure was one of the first of its kind in New York. However, the construction could not be finished due to lack of funds and so the substructure remained standing for decades.
In 1999 the Hearst Corporation decided to plan a new company headquarters in Manhattan. Instead of a new building, it was decided to completely reschedule and renew the old building. So the old facade of the building was preserved. The interior of the building was gutted and the new Hearst Tower was installed in the old building.
"Only when the sunset bathes the skyline in a golden glow does Foster's tower only remain a dab with no clear contours."
Awards
The building received the Emporis Skyscraper Award in 2006 and the International High- Rise Award in 2008 .
