The film Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405 is based on interviews that the film's director, Frank Stiefel, had with the artist Mindy Alper for more than 20 hours. Alper channeled her inner fears, depression, trauma and the like in drawings and paper mache sculptures.

The title of the documentation comes from Alper himself.

At the 2018 Academy Awards , Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405 came out on top in the “Best Documentary Short Film” category against Edith + Eddie , Heroin (s) , Knife Skills and Traffic Stop . The short film also won both audience and jury awards at the Full Frame Film Festival and the Austin Film Festival. It was also nominated for best short film at the IDA Awards .
