The band was formed in 1973 in London by theater actor and singer Gary Holton , Mickey Waller (guitar), Ronnie Thomas (bass), Keith Boyce (drums) and Danny Peyronel (keyboard). Gary Holton previously played two years in the musical Hair in London. Keith Boyce had previously played with Long John Baldry . The name "Heavy Metal Kids" comes from a novel by William S. Burroughs and has nothing to do with the genre of music . The heavy metal kids did not adopt any of the styles popular in the early 1970s, such as glam rock or progressive rock , but played original rock music with borrowings from the blues and rhythm and blues .

The band was discovered in the same year by Dave Dee for Atlantic Records and signed there. In 1974 her self-titled debut album was released . The band managed to get hold of a contract as the house band of the London club Speakeasy . As the opening act for Alice Cooper under the shortened name "The Kids" they went on their first US tour. Waller got out shortly afterwards and was replaced by Cosmo. With him the album Anvil Chorus was recorded. After touring extensively (up to 300 gigs a year), Cosmo and Peyronel, who joined UFO, dropped out and were replaced by John Sinclair (keyboard) and Barry Paul (guitar).

At the end of the year they also lost their record deal, but were able to sign to Mickie Mosts RAK Records very quickly . During this time, Gary Holton was noticed by his increasing alcohol and drug excesses and had to leave the band by 1976. The Heavy Metal kids tried to go on alone, but it didn't work out properly. Holton returned to the recordings of the 1977 work Kitsch . The single She's No Angel was the only work of the band in the charts and the group was allowed to appear on Top of the Pops in 1976. However, six months later the band broke up.

Gary Holton died on October 15, 1985 of a drug overdose.

In 2003 the band was re-founded. With two new members, the remaining members recorded another album called Hit the Right Button .

meaning

Today the band is considered to be way ahead of their time. Her style can be seen as the forerunner of 77s punk rock . Several bands from the 1970s and 1980s cited the heavy metal kids as a major influence, including The Damned and The Adverts touring with them in 1976 . In the 1980s Hanoi Rocks in particular called the band an influence. The snotty Cockney accent used by Holton as a stylistic device is also considered to be an influence on the first Oi! -Welle, especially for Cock Sparrer , as well as for the Britpop bands Oasis and Blur .
