history

Maschinenfabrik Göhring & Hebenstreit

former machine factory Göhring & Hebenstreit (No. 62)

In 1898, the engineers Hermann Göhring and Oskar Hebenstreit founded a joint venture in Dresden, which at the beginning mainly produced paint drying ovens for the metal goods industry. In 1907 Göhring and Hebenstreit moved into a new factory building at Alt-Radebeuler Gartenstraße 62, where their company developed into one of the leading manufacturers of baking equipment for bread, biscuits, waffles, biscuits and rusks. This worked closely with the Haubold & Richter waffle factory, 400 meters away as the crow flies, in the form of a development partnership, a collaboration that was also continued successfully during the GDR era. In particular, the fully automatic waffle baking machines launched on the market in 1925 made the machine factory with its more than 200 employees internationally successful.

From 250 employees in 1930, the company grew to over 425 during the Second World War , of which over 100 were foreign forced laborers . During the Second World War, production had to be largely converted to the manufacture of war-essential materials. Therefore, the company was completely dismantled in 1945 by the Soviet occupying forces . After the referendum in Saxony on June 30, 1946 , the owners of the machine factory Göhring & Hebenstreit were expropriated , whereupon the Hebenstreit family moved to the western zone . Their operation was continued as VEB Maschinenfabrik "Spezial" . The machine factory “Spezial” also exported a large part of its production in the period that followed.

Rapido works

In Dresden Kaditz based factory for shop equipment Albin Lasch & Co. maintained a department in which from 1911 also included US scales were repaired. This department became independent in 1920 under the direction of the engineer Wilhelm Richard Lehmann as Sächsische Präzisionswaagen GmbH Dresden . In 1923 the company developed its own 1 kg incline scale and in 1925 a 5 kg incline scale.

After the entry of a new partner, the company, renamed Dresdner Waagenbaugesellschaft mbH , moved to the Radebeul industrial area in its own production rooms at Gartenstrasse 64. Lehmann expanded the production program to include fast precision scales and fully automatic large scales, which gave the company an excellent reputation. There were also counting and testing machines.

The selected due to the weighing speed of the products brand name "Rapid" was changed in 1935 because of its abundance in "Rapido", 1937, with the detachment from the original shareholders and the renaming of the company in Rapido works R. Lehmann & Co. Since the company also Due to its export successes to Sweden as well as Eastern and Southeastern Europe, the production area was expanded to the neighboring property No. 63 on the other side of the street. With the growth from 200 to 600 employees during the Second World War, the production spectrum changed to armaments.

In 1945 the production facilities were confiscated and handed over to a trustee by the city of Radebeul. Production was resumed at the end of 1945, however, and in 1946 around 200 workers were employed again.

In 1947 the expropriation took place, as a result of which the company was first continued as a RAWA special factory for automatic weighing, counting and testing machines and later as the VEB Polygraph special scale factory "Rapido" . In 1968 the company was renamed VEB Wägetechnik Rapido .

Hebenstreit-Rapido

In 1970 the neighboring companies Wägetechnik Rapido and Maschinenfabrik “Spezial” merged to form VEB Wägetechnik Rapido . Due to the production program, which consisted of waffle baking machines, mechanical and electromechanical scales and, from 1982, also ATMs, the company with 1,400 employees was part of the Nagema combine in 1989 (food and beverage engineering). The company was the only manufacturer in the GDR for ATMs. The company had a world market share for wafer baking systems of up to 15%.

After the transfer into the ownership of the Treuhandanstalt in 1990, the company became independent in 1994 as Radebeuler Waagen- und Maschinenfabrik GmbH and in 1996 as Rapido Waagen- und Maschinenfabrik GmbH .

After the discontinuation of the loss-making and uncompetitive scale production, the company was incorporated in 1997 as the Hebenstreit-Rapido subsidiary of the Frankfurt wafer baking machine manufacturer Hebenstreit GmbH . This was founded in 1950 by the son of one of the company founders of the original Göhring & Hebenstreit machine factory , Otto Hebenstreit, in Frankfurt am Main . With effect from March 31, 2008, the Radebeul location became a branch of Hebenstreit GmbH with its headquarters in Mörfelden-Walldorf through a change of name and a spin-off.

The plant in Radebeul produces fully automatic wafer baking systems mainly for the international market.
