Life

Hector Giacomelli - A Perch of Birds

The son of an Italian singing teacher was initially an engraver and chaser and initially worked from 1844 to 1854 as a craftsman for goldsmithing. For health reasons he withdrew from Paris for a while and developed a passion for the flora and fauna in the country. Returning to Paris, he was commissioned by Gustave Doré to draw frames and ornaments for an illustrated edition of the Bible that he was planning, which after its publication in 1865 also brought Giacomelli a great success. So he became a sought-after draftsman and turned entirely to the illustration of books. His favorite field was depicting insects, birds and flowers.

Giacomelli was also a collector and in 1862 published the Catalog raisonné de l'oeuvre gravé et lithographié de Raffet , a catalog raisonné of the graphic works of Auguste Raffet .

In 1878 he was accepted into the Legion of Honor .
