André Theuriet (born October 8, 1833 in Marly-le-Roi , Yvelines department , † April 23, 1907 in Bourg-la-Reine , Hauts-de-Seine department ) was a French poet, novelist and playwright.

Live and act

Theuriet spent his school days in Bar-le-Duc and then began studying law at the Sorbonne in Paris . After its successful graduation, he got a job in the Ministry of Finance. At the age of 29 he accepted a position at the University of Tours and taught there until 1863.

During his studies he made the acquaintance of various Parnassians , to which he is also counted today. In 1867 Theuriet made a successful debut with an anthology of his own poems (“Chemin des bois”) and in the end his oeuvre comprised 226 works. Almost all of his first poems had already been published in various magazines; many in the Revue des Deux Mondes .

In 1886 Theuriet retired with the rank of head of department and from that time worked only literary. In 1890 the Académie française honored him with the "Prix Vitet". When Alexandre Dumas the Younger died in 1895, the Académie française Theuriet accepted as its successor (Armchair 2) the following year. The writer Jean Richepin became Theuriet's successor in 1908.
