Hedda Walther

Hedda Walther (née Hedwig Gerhardt ; born September 13, 1894 in Berlin ; † November 21, 1979 there ) was a German photographer .

Life

In 1916 Hedwig Gerhardt married Kurt Wilhelm Walther, the Berlin councilor for commerce. In 1915 their daughter Sonja was born, who also became a well-known photographer as Sonja Georgi in the 1940s and 1950s. The marriage ended in divorce in 1917.

Walther received her training as a photographer from 1918 to 1920 at the Lette Association in Berlin, and from 1924 to 1925 she worked as an assistant to Bruno Wiehr in Dresden . In 1925 she returned to Berlin, where she opened a studio for children's portraits in Westend . Her first photographs appeared in the magazine Qualität and the French magazine Journale de la Semaine . In 1928, in collaboration with Paul Eipper , she wrote the very successful book Animals look at you , which made her internationally known as an animal photographer. In the following 1930s, further illustrated books with animal and children's photographs were published, some again in collaboration with Paul Eipper. She also worked as a fashion photographer for magazines such as Die Dame , Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung and Der Silberspiegel . During the World War she created color photographs of wall paintings as part of the “Führer mission monumental painting” . After 1945 she lived with her daughter on Sylt , where they had fled after the war. In the following years she devoted herself entirely to fashion photography. By 1960 her work appeared in illustrated fashion publications such as Film und Frau .
