Hédi Fried (2015)

Hédi Fried (born June 15, 1924 in Sighet , Romania as Hédi Szmuk ) is a Romanian- Swedish writer and psychologist . She survived the Holocaust in the concentration camps in Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz . In July 1945 she came to Sweden through the Red Cross . She graduated in psychology at the University of Stockholm , and is engaged in educational work on the Holocaust. Since the 1990s she has authored several books on the subject in Sweden. Hédi Fried has received numerous awards for her commitment, including the Illis Quorum Medal in 1997 , an honorary doctorate from Stockholm University in 2002 , the award of the Swedish Raoul Wallenberg Academy in 2015, and the Star of Romania in 2016 , the country's highest civilian award , and 2017 with the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Olof Palme Prize .
