The Hegbachsee is a former quarry pond in the Groß-Gerau district in Hesse . The western part is in the municipality of Nauheim and the eastern part belongs to Groß-Gerau . The lake is traversed by the Hegbach . The Apfelbach also flows here from the east .
The lake was created in the mid-1960s on the western edge of the Niederwaldpark in Groß-Gerau through gravel mining for the construction of the new federal motorway 67 , which has since run through the edge of the forest not far from the lake. The Schwarzbachgebiet-Ried water association has designated the Hegbachsee as a flood retention basin and it has developed into the core of a local recreation area . There are two campsites, one on the north-east bank on the Nauheim side, a few hundred meters from the village, and one at the southern end, which can be reached from Groß-Gerau, around two kilometers away. A weekend settlement, dining options as well as play and paddling opportunities for children complete the offer.
Since the Hegbach serves as a receiving water for sewage treatment plants, the water of the lake is not bacteriologically unpolluted and can therefore no longer serve as bathing water.
Through targeted planting and natural succession , a varied flora has developed on the lakeshore and the body of water is a habitat, resting place or hunting ground for many water-bound bird species.
