The Eidechsspitze , mostly just called the Hegedex , is a 2738 m high mountain in the southern Zillertal Alps in South Tyrol .
Location and surroundings
The Hegedex rises freely in the ridge that borders the Pfunderer valley on the east side and dominates the view of the Pustertal from the Brixen area. To the west it breaks off with a wide, steep flank into the Pfunderer valley, on the south side the pre-summit of the Altberg ( 2385 m ) and the settlement terrace of Terenten are in front of it. On the east side, the mountain range is bounded by the short Terner Valley (also Terentental ).
Alpinism
The Hegedex can be reached via two marked, easy hiking trails that unite just below the summit structure and reach it via the east ridge. Either the village of Terenten ( 1210 m ) or the Tiefrastenhütte ( 2312 m ) serve as starting points for the ascent to the summit .
In winter the mountain is also a destination for ski tourers . The Heini Holzers and Helmut Vitrolers descent over the western flank became famous in 1975.
etymology
In 1336 the mountain is named as the spiz des Egedaechs , in 1474 as the spitz des Egdeachs . The shape of the lizard tip has been documented since 1840 .
Why the mountain bears the name of a reptile ( Hegedex is the Tyrolean dialect word for lizard ) is unclear. Egon Kühebacher postulates a frequent occurrence of the animals on the sunny southern slopes. Other assumptions bring the name Hegedex with the legend that locates the seat of a warlock on the mountain .
