The complex, popularly known as Herrenburg or Heidenburg , is the ruin of a hilltop castle near the Oberstaufenbach community of the Kusel-Altenglan community in the Kusel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . The ruins of the former castle stand on a foothill of the Krämelberg above the valley of the Reichenbach.

history

Neither the builder nor the exact construction time nor the original name of the complex are known. Due to the use of Roman building poles , the complex was mistaken for a late Roman hilltop castle. The finds, however, allow a date to the 11th and 12th centuries.

investment

Only a few remains of the complex have survived. Most of the hilltop on which it was located was already removed by a quarry in the 19th century. In 1885, the historical association of the Palatinate carried out a survey of the remains that were preserved at that time.

The castle originally had the shape of a rounded triangle that was 98 meters long and 68 meters wide. The interior of the northern castle area is not known. During the investigations in 1885, two-meter-thick wall remains were found in the southern area, which indicate a residential tower with a base area of 14 by 17 meters. Remnants of the wall next to it were interpreted as a chapel .

Due to the quarry, only the southern course of the curtain wall , which was 1.50 to 1.80 meters thick, is preserved today.
