While Greiz itself was first mentioned in a document in 1209, Kurtschau was first mentioned in 1394.
Sports
When it was founded in 1971, the Sportgemeinschaft Kurtschau e. V. with its departments of fistball , badminton , gymnastics, archery (since 2017), children's sports and, in the 80s, table tennis for sporting activities in and around the area. The Kurtschauer have been successful for years in Thuringia's highest league - the Verbandsliga - with fistball in particular. In 2008 both the first men's team from Kurtschau and the women's team won the Thuringian state championship. The youth teams AK12 and AK14 were each runner-up this year.
Four times a year, carnival events take place in the Kurtschau gymnasium, which are organized by the SG Kurtschau.

The most famous former citizen of Kurtschau is the astronaut Ulf Merbold . He is an honorary citizen of Greiz. He spent his youth in Greiz-Kurtschau.
