Dölau is located on federal highway 92 on the eastern side of the elevated Elsterniederung opposite the An der Goldenen Aue in the Thuringian Slate Mountains south of the city of Greiz.

history

Dölau was first mentioned in a document on June 12, 1359. The castle was built by the Lobdeburgers in the 12th century . In 1288 a knight from Dolen (Dölau) was mentioned. The castle was named again in 1359. Ruins of Dölau Castle lie on a rock above the right bank of the White Elster . A modern kemenaten-like building is evidence of the castle . The moats were filled in during the construction of the paved Greiz - Elsterberg road. Several times Dölau was the residence of its own lords Reuss-Dölau. On April 9, 1621, Heinrich IV. Reuss von Plauen of the older line, House Dölau, set up a mint in his residence Dölau and minted his own coins. Later, in the Principality of Reuss older line, Dölau was the main town of the Dölau office. a. Zeulenroda belonged. Dölau has had a station on the Gera - Weischlitz line since September 8, 1875, when the second part of the Elstertalbahn was opened . Initially referred to as Dölau (Elster), the station was renamed Dölau (Reuss) at the end of 1916 and, after incorporation in 1922, was given the still valid name Greiz-Dölau. On May 16, 1894, Dölau received a postal agency.

On April 1, 1922, the neighboring towns of Rothenthal and Sachswitz were incorporated. On October 1st of the same year the new community came to the city of Greiz.
