Location of the places of Sachswitz / Dölau / Rothenthal in the city of Greiz

Sachswitz / Dölau / Rothenthal is a district of the city of Greiz in the district of Greiz in Thuringia . It consists of the places Dölau , Rothenthal and Sachswitz .

location

The district is located south of Greiz in the valley of the White Elster . It extends like a tongue into the neighboring Saxon area, where the city of Elsterberg borders.

The geography is quite different in the three places in the district and is shaped by the Thuringian Slate Mountains . Rothenthal lies on the left side of a river bend known as the Elsterknie , which delimits the settlement area. The slopes of the incised valley are very steep and rocky, which is why the area is known regionally as the Rothenthal Alps . Dölau and Sachswitz are further south on an elevated valley low on the right side of the Elster. In Dölau, the Greiz-Dölau storage facility is located in a separate loop of the Elster river .

The three places have mostly grown together and have almost continuous development.

history

The first documented settlement in this area is Dölau (1359). Dölau Castle was built here as early as the 12th century . This was the ancestral seat of the noble family von Dölau . Later the place was the seat of the office Dölau. A small southeastern part of the place belongs to Saxony .

Sachswitz was first mentioned in a document in 1380. The community was divided into a Reussian (later Thuringian) part (to Reuss-Greiz ) and a Saxon part (to the Plauen Office or to the Plauen District Administration ). The Saxon part was scattered in exclaves within the community . It was not until 1928 that the entire location came to Greiz through an area swap.

Rothenthal was first mentioned in a document in 1444. Towards the end of the 17th century, the place was one of the four Greiz states next to Obergreiz, Untergreiz and Greiz-Dölau. The Rothenthal Castle was demolished around 1990.

On April 1, 1922, Sachswitz and Rothenthal, until then independent communities, were incorporated into Dölau. Six months later, on October 1, 1922, the towns and numerous other communities came to the city of Greiz. This became circular in this context.

economy

In Dölau, Rothenthal and Sachswitz, as in Greiz, the textile trade was the largest branch of the economy from the 18th century. The current Greiz-Dölau chemical plant, the largest employer in the district, emerged from this branch. It belonged to Akzo Nobel from 1998 and to the Nouryon Group since 2018 . The plant produces polysulphides under the brand name Thioplast , which are used as sealants, and has a global market share of over 50%.

Other companies are a building trade in Sachswitz, a disposal company and drinking water supply in Dölau and two car dealerships in Rothenthal.

traffic

The district is crossed by the B 94 along the Elster , which leads from Greiz to Elsterberg. In Sachswitz, the state road 1296 branches off in the direction of Netzschkau , which continues on the Saxon side as state road 296 .

The Elstertalbahn also runs along the Elster from Gera to Weischlitz . This owns the Greiz-Dölau station in Dölau, which includes a small marshalling yard and a siding to the chemical plant.

In the road-bound public transport system , the three locations are connected to Greiz and Elsterberg by Line 1 of the PRG Greiz . This runs every half hour from Monday to Friday and every two hours on weekends. This line was electrified from 1946 to 1969 and was operated with trolleybuses . In addition, line 84 of the Reichenbacher Verkehrsbetrieb (Elsterberg - Reichenbach) touches the district with two stops in Sachswitz.
