Local transport in Greiz
The Greiz city traffic has existed in the East Thuringian city since 1925. The main line was also used by trolleybuses from 1945 to 1969 .
Urban bus transport
For topographical reasons, the urban area of Greiz does not expand evenly on all sides, but rather follows the narrow valleys of the White Elster and the Aubaches. This results in distances for the residents that are otherwise rare in a city with a similarly large population - around 39,000 inhabitants in 1931. In addition, the construction of a tram planned around 1900 did not materialize.
When, even after the First World War, the Reichspost was not ready to serve inner-city traffic, the “Städtische Kraftomnibus-Verkehr Greiz” was created as a municipal company. As of May 31, 1925, the line from the St. Adelheid Inn through the Aubach Valley in the east of the city to the center and further south via the Dölau district to the neighboring Saxon town of Elsterberg with around 5,000 inhabitants was used as planned. There was an omnibus that served the route eleven to twelve times a day between 6:00 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. In 1928 the large garage in Adelheidstrasse was opened to park the buses.
This "main line" was soon followed by further lines to the suburbs and some neighboring cities. In 1926, 1,260,000 passengers were already counted. That number nearly doubled by 1930. Due to the global economic crisis , however, the number of passengers then plummeted again.
Before the start of the Second World War in 1939, the company comprised seven urban and suburban lines as well as four overland lines - including to Reichenbach im Vogtland and Weida - with a total length of 80 kilometers. 15 buses (1930) and later 18 buses (1939) were in use here, including a three-axle Büssing bus with 95 hp. In 1940 a semitrailer bus was added ("Langer Thüringer"), which had 55 seats and was probably the largest bus in Germany at the time.
In January 1945 operations were stopped due to the war and operations were resumed in September 1945.

Even during the war and post-war years, when the population of 45,000 was reached in 1946, the demand for transport services increased. However - despite the introduction of coal gas and wood gas operation - it became increasingly difficult to provide the necessary vehicles. In the middle of the war, the city began to build a trolleybus system. However, due to the prevailing shortage of manpower and material, the first section could only be completed a few months after the end of the war.
On September 21, 1945, the 3.9 kilometer stretch from Schönfeld ( St. Adelheid ) to Tannendorf was opened. The route was extended to the south in two stages: in July 1946 by 2.4 kilometers to Dölau and in November 1946 by a further 3.4 kilometers to Elsterberg , where turning loops were created because not all journeys served the entire route. Nine vehicles were available for the 9.7-kilometer route; the first were delivered in 1945 by Fahrzeugbau Schumann GmbH from Werdau .
In 1949 the transport company was incorporated into the "KWU - Municipal Business Enterprise of the City of Greiz" and on January 1, 1954 it was subordinated to the "VEB Kraftverkehr Greiz". In 1959, VEB Kraftverkehr Greiz, VEB Deutsche Spedition Greiz and Spedition Victor Walter were merged to form VEB Kraftverkehr und Spedition. This was merged in 1960 with VEB Kraftverkehr Zeulenroda to VEB Kraftverkehr Greiz. Because one could not or did not want to carry out the renovation work required after almost twenty-five years of operation, the trolleybus operation was stopped on July 11, 1969; Hungarian articulated buses of the type Ikarus K 180 were purchased to strengthen the vehicle fleet.
Today's operation
After the reunification, the bus operation was converted on July 1, 1990 into the "Verkehrs-GmbH Greiz", from which the " PRG Personen- und Reiseverkehrs-GmbH Greiz " (PRG) emerged on January 23, 1991 , whose carriers were the former districts of Greiz and Zeulenroda were.
The Greiz bus station was inaugurated on October 3, 2003 and is located on a former part of the Greiz train station , which belonged to the track field before the Neumark – Greiz railway line was closed and the subsequent reconstruction. The bus station consists of a building with a kiosk, a handicapped toilet and a lounge for the bus drivers. There is a display board for bus and train departures and 7 bus platforms (5 for departure and 2 for arrival). There is space for 10 buses on the parking areas.
