The Neumark – Greiz railway was a branch line (initially the main line ) in Saxony and Thuringia , which was once built by the private Greiz-Brunner railway company . It ran from Neumark in the Saxon Vogtland to Greiz in Thuringia . The line was closed in 1999.

As early as 1839, the Greiz manufacturers had tried to connect to the Saxon-Bavarian Railway , which was planned at the time . Ultimately, this route was run entirely through Saxon territory, although a route through the Elstertal would have made the large bridges in the Vogtland unnecessary. Even later, Saxony was not interested in a railway in the Elstertal, as it did not want to allow competition with its own routes.

In 1855, a railway construction association was set up in Greiz to build a connecting line to the Saxon-Bavarian Railway. A state treaty between the Principality of Reuss Older Line and the Kingdom of Saxony created the conditions for the construction of the railway on November 3, 1863. On June 30, 1864, the Greiz-Brunner Railway Company was constituted .

Construction work on the route began on September 17, 1864. The starting point of the new line was Neumark station, from where the tracks of the Saxon-Bavarian Railway were initially used. At the newly built Brunn stop, the track branched off the main line and then led to Greiz in the Aubach valley. The line ended at the later Greiz Aubachtal station . The construction work was carried out very quickly, so that the route was completed in October 1865. On October 21, 1865, the route was opened with a pageant; regular train services began on October 23, 1865.

As early as January 1, 1876, the Greiz-Brunner Railway Company was nationalized, and the Neumark – Greiz line was now part of the Royal Saxon State Railways network . Immediately afterwards, construction work began on the short connecting line to the Elstertalbahn . Directly after the previous station in Greiz, a tunnel over 200 meters long had to be excavated in order to be able to integrate the route from the south into the Greiz station on the Elstertalbahn. On October 15, 1879, the two kilometer long connecting line was put into operation.

As the last extension of the route, the NG line received its own track between Neumark and Brunn, which was put into operation on May 19, 1886.

In 1924 this previous main line was downgraded to a branch line .

Decommissioning and reuse

After the political change in 1989/1990, the number of passengers on the trains decreased more and more. Passenger traffic was finally stopped when the timetable changed on May 31, 1997; the freight rested since the end of 1995. The total decommissioning took place then 1999. February 28 A little later was associated with the route expansion to the Saxon-Franconian trunk line to the track between Neumark and Brunn on the open Planum catenary put .

On most sections of the line, the tracks have been dismantled since the closure. Since 2019 the Greiz - Mohlsdorf section has been redesigned into a railway cycle path .

Although the Werdau - Reichenbach section of the Leipzig – Hof railway line opened in 1846 , Neumark (Sachs) only gained greater importance with the opening of the Neumark – Greiz railway line in 1865 by the private Greiz-Brunner Railway Company . The station was expanded several times up to around 1900 and remained largely unchanged until the 1990s. Although the line to Greiz was closed in 1999, the station has not completely lost its importance, as the Vogtlandbahn opened its central repair workshop here in 2000.

Brunn (Sachs)

The Brunn (Sachs) stop was opened as the Brunn stop on May 19, 1886 and dedicated to the station in 1905. In 1922 the name was changed to Brunn (Sachs) . After the station was downgraded to a stop in 1952, from 1970 it was only considered a stop. On June 1, 1997, the station went out of service. Although it is named after the Reichenbach district of Brunn , it was located south of the Neumark district of Schönbach . It was the last stop in Saxony in the direction of Greiz. The reception building is still there at the location on “Bahnhofsweg”. It is privately owned. The sleepers are still there in the direction of Greiz.

Mohlsdorf

The Mohlsdorf Station was opened on 23 October 1865 as a stop and in 1905 dedicated to the station. It was the first stop on the route in the Principality of Reuss and Thuringia. In 1975 the goods shed was demolished. On June 1, 1997, the station went out of service. At the location on "Bahnhofstrasse" in the south of Mohlsdorf, the reception building and the waiting hall are still there, but in the process of decay. The area of ​​the station is heavily overgrown with bushes.

Greiz Aubachtal

The Greiz Aubachtal station was on 23 October 1865 as the station Greiz opened. This gave the city of Greiz a rail connection. After Greiz received a second station in 1875 with the opening of the Gera Süd – Weischlitz railway line , the new Greiz unt Bf station and Greiz station were designated as Greiz ob Bf . From 1886 the station is named as Greiz stop and from 1897 as Greiz-Aubachthal . Today's spelling without a hyphen has been in effect since 1911. After the station was officially elevated to a train station in 1905, it was downgraded to a stop in 1994. It went out of service on June 1, 1997. The reception building has been preserved to this day at the location on "Rechtsstrasse" in Greiz. Opposite is the "City Center Greiz".

The Greiz station was opened on July 17, 1875 under the name Greiz unt Bf with the Wolfsgefärth –Greiz section of the Gera Süd – Weischlitz railway line. Until the opening of the section to the lower station in Plauen on September 8, 1875, it was a terminus station . Since Greiz was the state capital of the Principality of Reuss older line , the station was expanded to become the second largest station on the line. After the purchase of the Neumark – Greiz railway line by the Greiz-Brunner Railway Company by the Kingdom of Saxony, this line was extended in 1876 from Greiz ob Bf to Greiz und Bf , making the station a railway junction. In 1879 the station was named Greiz Bahnhof and in 1897 the name Greiz . Structural changes were made around 1880 and 1920.

After passenger traffic on the railway to Neumark was discontinued in 1997, the line was closed in 1999. Since then, the Greiz train station has only been a through station. In 2001 the goods shed was demolished. It was followed by the coal and locomotive shed in 2015.
