Location of the Bretmühle in the city of Greiz

The Bretmühle is a single settlement in the Neumühle / Elster district of the city of Greiz in the Greiz district in Thuringia .

location

The Bretmühle lies alone in the valley of the White Elster on the sliding slope of a loop of the river . Neumühle is to the north, Greiz to the south and the Neuhammer to the west. The buildings are surrounded by the Greiz-Werurance forest .

history

The oldest part of today's Bretmühle is the residential building from 1537. The mill was first mentioned in 1609. The buildings were built as a hammer mill and sawmill and expanded into a farm. In the middle of the 19th century a restaurant with a small brewery was established. The brewery was demolished along with some farm buildings in 1950.

Originally the mill belonged to the municipality of Nitschareuth . With the formation of the community Neumühle / Elster on January 1, 1960, it became a district of the same. On December 31, 2019, the municipality of Neumühle / Elster was incorporated into Greiz, which also brought the Bretmühle to Greiz.

The Bretmühle stud

The buildings in the settlement are now part of the Bretmühle stud farm . This is a nationally known horse breeding business with horse training and a riding and driving school . Today's stable and barn complex was built around 1950. Around 1980 the boxing stables, the running stables and the stallion stables were built. The latter is now used as a children's holiday camp.

The Bretmühle Bridge

The Bretmühle is connected to Greiz to the south via the copper hammer. For a long time, the direct route to Neumühle was only passable via a ford . On November 10, 2005, the Bretmühle Bridge was set up here. The Elster cycle path leads over here through the Bretmühle. On the opposite side of the White Elster, the L 2344 leads from Greiz to Knottengrund .

The Gera Süd – Weischlitz railway line passes the hamlet with the Bretmühlentunnel without a stop.
