Location of the Reißberg in the city of Greiz

The Reißberg is an elevation in Greiz in the district of Greiz in Thuringia and is also the name of the settlement area on it. Politically, the Reißberg belongs to the inner city of Greiz and was never part of any other municipality.

location

The Reißberg represents an eastern plateau of the White Elster and is located north of the center of Greiz. It is geographically bounded in the north by the Krümmetal and in the south by the clay pit. To the east is the Pohlitz district , to the west, on the slope, is the Greiz district hospital and the city park.

History of development

Until the end of the 19th century, the Reißberg was undeveloped and used for agriculture . Around 1890 the first building in the area was built, the “Wagner” villa. In 1893, the “Red House” was the first building of today's Greizer hospital on the edge of the Reissberg. The development was continued from 1904 with the establishment of the "Christian Workers' Association in Greiz". This set up allotments on the eastern edge of the Reissberg, which are now organized as the "Garden Association Reissberg 04". From 1910, further residential buildings were built by association members near the complex and on the rest of the Reißberg, mainly by wealthy manufacturers. The loose development with gardens still conveys a rural flair and is in contrast to the villas in the new town.

The development of this "old rippberg" has remained unchanged since the Second World War. From 1976 onwards, as part of the GDR's housing program, blocks of flats with around 2000 apartments were built in the fields west of this area. An adventure playground was built around the same time on the centrally located Reissbergplatz, which was previously used as a soccer field. From 1980, the “Zaschberg” residential area was also built in the northeast of the Reissberg.

According to the Greiz urban development concept, the new building areas Reißberg-Pohlitz and Zaschberg should be completely demolished from 2003 to 2020. However, the majority of the apartment blocks still exist and are inhabited today, but most of them have not been renovated.

traffic

The Reißberg is connected to the city center via several roads. The Gerhart-Hauptmann-Straße, which leads east of the settlement, was built with the reissue mountain-Pohlitz area and runs to Pohlitz. The hospital to the west is connected via a barrier-regulated road.

In local public transport , the Reissberg is connected to the center of Greiz by bus line 6 from PRG Greiz every quarter of an hour. The buses run every hour through the Reissbergplatz and the hospital into the city.
