The Wrackmuseum Vrak - Museum of Wrecks (proper case) is currently under construction Museum of Underwater Archeology in Stockholm , Sweden . It is located on the island of Djurgården and is scheduled to open in 2020.

Background and concept

Due to the special natural conditions and the changing history of the Baltic Sea, there are more than 100 very well-preserved wrecks and other remains from different periods in the area. The unique combination of brackish water , cold, darkness and low oxygen levels in the Baltic Sea enables different materials, even wood, to be preserved in very good condition. In recent years, technological developments and modern archaeological research have helped to significantly expand knowledge about this cultural heritage.

The wreck museum wants to convey knowledge about these finds with upscale objects and digital technology. Wrecks that remain on the seabed for conservation reasons are to be presented virtually. The museum organizes guided tours on Djurgården and regularly presents new research results.

A part of the naval shipyard was located on the island of Djurgården until 1969 . Galärvarvet was built after 1722 as a galley shipyard for the archipelago fleet . The fuel museum moved into a listed boathouse built in the 1750s in 2012 .

The Vasa , which sank in 1628, was preserved in a dry dock from 1961 to 1988. The temporary building of the Vasa shipyard ( Swedish Wasavarvet ) was replaced after 1987 by the Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet) , which opened on June 15, 1990. In Dyktankhuset , built in 1936 , a group exhibition on the history of diving has been shown since 1999 .

On the west side of Djurgården are two boathouses designed by Paul Hedqvist in 1941. In Båthall 2 , the Maritime History Museum showed parts of one of the largest historical boat collections in Europe with around 50 vehicles from the 15th to the 20th century. In 2017, the permanent exhibition "Vikingaliv - The Viking Museum" was opened in Båthall 1 . In order to create a location for the wreck museum, the boats moved from Båthall 2 to Rindö in 2018 . After the takeover of the Järnvägsmuseet Railway Museum, the name of the sponsor changed in 2019 to Statens maritima och transporthistoriska museer (SMTM, State Maritime and Transport History Museums).
