The Knottengrund lies in the valley of the White Elster , the place stretches from northwest to southeast along the right slope. In the southern settlement area, the valley is widened by the Krebsbach and Schlötenbach. Neumühle is to the west on the opposite side of the Elster and the district of Grüne Eiche is to the east. Greiz is 7 kilometers to the south. The place is located in a foothills of the Greiz-Werurance forest .

In the area of ​​the Knottengrund, the Knottenmühle was built around 1200 as the first building in today's district. This was rebuilt to its current state around 1924 and was in operation until the middle of the 20th century.

In connection with Neumühle's appointment as a climatic health resort, numerous villas were built in Knottengrund and rented out to guests. From 1960 onwards, numerous single-family houses were built in Waltersdorfer Straße and Gartenweg northwest of the existing housing estate. Today, some public institutions such as the fire station, the kindergarten and, to the end, the municipal administration are located in Knottengrund.

In 1892 the "Gesangsverein Knottengrund" was founded. This later joined the Reussian Singers Association and in 1934 became part of the German Singers Association . Around 1958 the choral society was dissolved.

Originally the area belonged mainly to the municipality of Waltersdorf . With the formation of the community Neumühle / Elster on January 1, 1960, the Knottengrund became a district of the same. On December 31, 2019, the Neumühle / Elster community with all settlements was incorporated into Greiz.

In Knottengrund, the L 2344 from Greiz meets the L 1085 from Langenwetzendorf and the federal road 92 to Teichwolframsdorf . From the latter, the district road 209 branches off to Berga / Elster to the federal road 175 in the settlement area . The Gera Süd – Weischlitz railway line runs on the opposite side of the river.

In the local area there is a well-known bottleneck on the L 2344, which has been to be eliminated for a long time. The road is bordered there on one side by houses and on the other side by a rock.
