Heiko Augustinus Oberman

Heiko Augustinus Oberman (born October 15, 1930 in Utrecht , † April 22, 2001 in Tucson , Arizona ) was a Dutch church historian .

Life

After studying at the Universities of Utrecht and Oxford, he received his doctorate in Utrecht in 1957 with a thesis on the scholastic theologian Thomas Bradwardine . From 1956 to 1966 he taught at the Divinity School of Harvard University , most recently as Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History. In 1964 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . As the successor to Hanns Rückert , Oberman taught from 1966 to 1984 as a professor of church history at the Protestant theological faculty in Tübingen and headed the Institute for the Late Middle Ages and Reformation. Under his leadership, Tübingen became the world's most important center for research into late medieval and Reformation theology. He was particularly concerned with Martin Luther . From 1984 until his death, he taught as Regents Professor of Medieval, Renaissance, and Reformation History at the University of Arizona . He was married to Geertruida (* 1929) and had four children. His son Gerrit-Willem is a pastor in the Evangelical Church in Württemberg.

In 1963 he became a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW) and in 1964 a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1988 he became a corresponding member of the British Academy . Since 1991 he was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society .
